10 Everyday Hacks to Save Money at Home

October 03, 2024

Let’s be honest; everyone likes to save a buck or two. Of course, in today’s world, keeping money in our wallets seems more difficult. We’re homeowners at A.J. Perri, so we understand the financial strains and challenges you may experience— especially when budgeting for your home. So, to celebrate National Savings Day on October 12, we put together a list of simple ways to help you save money at home.

Try These Home Hacks Today

Little savings here and there can add up to significant savings over time. In addition to an annual heater tune-up, here are ten ways to make the most of your home savings this season.

Insulate pipes in the winter According to the U.S. Department of Energy, insulating your hot water pipes “reduces heat loss and can raise water temperature 2°F —4°F hotter than uninsulated pipes can deliver.” In turn, this will allow you to lower your water temperature setting, which may save you money! For DIY insulation, choose a one-inch fiberglass pipe wrap.

Wash laundry in cold water The American Cleaning Institute reveals that 90% of a washing machine's energy is used to heat water. Washing your laundry in cold water saves money each time.

Replace a failing thermostat

A faulty thermostat will make your system work harder than necessary and give you the wrong temperature reading. Upgrade to a smart thermostat and eliminate the guesswork of the actual temperature! Smart thermostats learn your life patterns and adjust the temperature settings when you’re home, away, and sleeping!

Consider a home audit

Do you feel that your energy bills are higher than they should be? You may want to consider a home energy audit. According to Energy.gov, an audit can reveal how much energy your home uses and where it is least efficient. Professional home audits are easy to schedule, too. Just contact your energy supplier for details on scheduling. And if they uncover any problems, feel free to call us for a heater tune-up or furnace inspection!

Update appliances

If your appliances are outdated or your HVAC system is inefficient, investing in an updated system can save you money in the long run. Even better, if you are

due for a qualifying high-efficiency HVAC system, heat pump, insulation, or water heater upgrade, you may be able to save thousands under the Inflation Reduction Act!

Insulate your water heater

Try this: Touch your water tank. Is it warm to the touch? If so, you should consider insulating it. Insulating your water heater may save you up to 16% in heating costs. Check your local hardware store for pre-cut jackets or water heater blankets. Lastly, don’t forget that scheduling water heater service once a year may also help prevent breakdowns.

Unplug electronics

It may seem overly simple, but unplugging electronics when not in use is a safe practice but may also help reduce energy costs.

Change filters

Changing your air filters every three months may reduce stress on your HVAC system and allow your unit to work more efficiently. And don’t forget, if you need assistance with that air purifier, we are here to help!

Install ceiling fans

Ceiling fans can be used in the summer to keep you cool and in the winter to keep you warm! Just remember to turn your blades counterclockwise in summer to create a cool downdraft and clockwise in winter to create an updraft and move warmer air around the room.

Run washing machine at night

You may save money by running your washing machine at off-peak hours. Typically speaking, running your washer between 11 p.m. and 7 a.m. may help reduce energy costs. Need more help? You can always contact your energy supplier for confirmation on the best “energy-saving” hours!

Happy Saving!
